May 10, 1869, the date of the completion of the first American trans-continental railroad, was the most important event in the westward expansion and the development of the United States into a great modern nation. Magnificent replicas of the two 4-4-0 locomotives which participated in the ceremony--Central Pacific No. 60, "Jupiter", and Union Pacific No. 119--now operate daily during the tourist season, re-creating the great event at the Golden Spike National Monument at Promontory Point, Utah.
